About the hall

Opened in 2005 to a design by Paul Andreu, its plan reads as a five-petalled flower: an entrance hall and three auditoriums. Andreu also designed Pudong International Airport and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, and the curved language runs through all three. The division of labour is clear. The 1953-seat Concert Hall is one of the largest purpose-built concert rooms in Shanghai and takes the orchestral and large choral programmes. The 1020-seat Opera Hall handles opera, dance and theatre. The 330-seat Recital Hall is chamber scale. The programming is heavy and broad, and three halls running on the same night is normal. Check which hall your ticket names — they have separate entrances.

Parking: Underground parking is reasonably plentiful, but the exit queue after a full house is long.
Worth knowing: The three halls share one building but not one door. Arrive ten minutes early and find the entrance named on your ticket.
