Khatia Buniatishvili Piano Recital

Buniatishvili comes to Shanghai in November with nine works and an interval that falls after the Schubert. The first half is a single piece: Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D. 960, one of the last three, written within months of his death in 1828, whose first movement alone often runs twenty minutes. Giving it the whole first half and leaving the second to short pieces is an unusual way to build an evening. After the interval: Satie's first Gymnopédie, Chopin's E minor Prelude and third Scherzo, Bach's Air on the G string, Schubert's G-flat major Impromptu D. 899 No. 3, and then three Liszt — the Ständchen after Schubert's Schwanengesang, the third Consolation, and the sixth Hungarian Rhapsody. Her readings are intensely personal: a piece in her hands often does not sound like most other performances of it, and that is exactly what divides the room. This date belongs to a six-city November tour presented by Wu Promotion — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Xi'an and Nanjing are the others, and Shanghai is so far the only one on sale. The hall is the SHOAC Concert Hall; the running time is not published.
