Collections

A season is the boundary a house drew, and we only record it. A collection is the boundary we drew: it can cross several houses, several seasons and several months, and put together concerts that were scattered but belong in one listening. Every night carries an editor's note, signed.

  1. An Unaccompanied September

    Six recitals in Shanghai this September are built on unaccompanied Bach. The D minor Partita — the one that ends with the Chaconne — is played three times in eleven days, by three violinists, in three different halls.

  2. Four Seasons Open in Nine Days

    Between 5 and 13 September the Shanghai Opera House, the Shanghai Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony and the Suzhou Symphony all open their seasons. An opening programme is usually a statement of intent; read side by side, the four say what each house wants this season to be remembered for.

    Ten days, two halls, eleven nights. All fifteen Shostakovich symphonies in six days, a day off, then three nights of Aida in the other room. The densest block in the Grand Opera House’s opening season.
