Víkingur Ólafsson Piano Recital

One key, all evening. All five works sit on E, moving between the brightness of E major and the inwardness of E minor — from a two-minute prelude out of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier to Beethoven's Op. 109. Between them are three large sonata-form works: Beethoven's Op. 90, in two movements, the second of which is among the most song-like things he wrote; Bach's Sixth Partita, the longest and hardest of the six; and Schubert's D 566, an early sonata left unfinished and unpublished in his lifetime. The ordering is not accidental. What one key becomes across different centuries and different keyboards is the evening's actual subject.
