Vakhtangov Theatre: Amadeus

Peter Shaffer's Amadeus in the Vakhtangov Theatre's 2023 staging, directed by Anatoly Shuliev — his first production on the theatre's main stage, in the year he was appointed its chief director. The play tells Mozart from Salieri's side: a court composer who worked his way to the top of musical Vienna, meets a flippant young man whose manuscripts need no corrections, and spends the rest of his life destroying him and hating himself for it. Mozart's own music, letters and documented history are worked into the production, but this is a play, not a concert — performed in Russian with Chinese surtitles, about 170 minutes with one interval. It won the MK Theatre Award for best actor. The Vakhtangov, founded on Moscow's Arbat in 1921 by a pupil of Stanislavski, brought War and Peace to this hall in 2024 and Eugene Onegin and Uncle Vanya in 2025.
