Elegant Chinese Music of Shanghai: The Wind from the Himalayas

One in the 海上雅乐 series, in the Oriental Art Center's recital hall on 14 November, a single performance for five players. Zhang Xin — composer, director and pianist, associate professor of composition and conducting at the Zhejiang Conservatory — is joined by Liu Zongqin (flute), Wang Jiushi (yangqin), Jiang Xiao (voice) and Zhang Tongfen (percussion and handpan). Wang Jiushi founded 海上雅乐 at this hall in 2009. The programme is part of Zhang Xin's cycle 《大地之风》: ten pieces in five sections, opening with The Wind's Message for flute and percussion, then Travelling with the Wind and Prayer Flags in the Clouds; The Old Song and The Fragrance of the Grassland; I Am Your Yamdrok and The Wind through the Gorge; Fireflies and Stars and I Have Become the Mountains and Rivers; and closing with You Have Become the Wind. The forces change piece by piece — yangqin alone, voice with piano, voice with handpan, all five together. The presenter notes the programme is subject to change.
