Yuja Wang & Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Yuja Wang appears with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra for two concerts in Harmony Hall at the Shanghai Grand Opera House. Each night has a different programme. Wang is at the piano and directs the orchestra from the keyboard. No separate conductor is used. On 13 November Wang plays Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1, then after the interval his Piano Concerto No. 2. The 14 November first half pairs Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1, the 'Classical', with Kapustin's Piano Concerto No. 4; the second half has Mozart's Symphony No. 29 in A major and Tsfasman's Suite for Piano and Orchestra, subtitled 'Jazz Suite'. Each concert runs about 110 minutes, with a 20-minute interval. Performers, programme and duration may change. The Mahler Chamber Orchestra began in 1997, founded by Claudio Abbado with players drawn from the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. More than twenty countries and regions are represented among its members, and it has no fixed home base. The presenter says Yuja Wang first worked with the orchestra over ten years ago, after an introduction by Abbado, and in 2024 she became its artistic partner. These two concerts form part of the Shanghai Grand Opera House's opening season and of the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
