About the performance

This is Shanghai Opera House's own Turandot, the production Roberto Andò made for the company in 2018, restaged by Marco Gandini and conducted by Paolo Carignani. Ewa Vesin is Turandot, Ivan Magrì sings Calaf and Xiao Xinyi sings Liù. According to the house, that production played three performances at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Opera House in April 2026. Turandot is a princess of the East, and she sets three riddles to the men who come to marry her; the suitors who cannot answer are executed. Calaf, a Tartar prince, decides to try. According to the house, Puccini took the Mo Li Hua tune as the core melody of the opera, and the opera also contains Calaf's aria “Nessun dorma”. Turandot is Puccini's last opera, and he did not finish it. He died in November 1924, with the third act still incomplete. The opera premiered at La Scala in Milan on 25 April 1926, and 2026 is the centenary of that premiere. Alongside the Shanghai Opera House Chorus and the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra, the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace Little Companion Art Troupe's Choir and the Shanghai Opera House Dance Troupe take part. The whole runs about 145 minutes, with two 15-minute intervals.

Why this one

  • Andò's 2018 production, revived by Gandini

The production is the one Italian director Roberto Andò made for Shanghai Opera House in 2018. The hall says it gave three performances at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Opera House in April 2026. Marco Gandini is the revival director and Paolo Carignani conducts.

  • Premiere night: the music stops at Liù's death

Puccini died in November 1924, with the third act unfinished. At the La Scala premiere on 25 April 1926, Toscanini conducted to the last point Puccini wrote, after Liù's death, and stopped. 2026 is the centenary of the premiere.

  • The children's chorus sings the Mo Li Hua tune

In Act I, the children's chorus Là sui monti dell'Est uses the melody of Mo Li Hua. According to the house, Puccini never went to China, and he heard the tune from a friend's music box. The children's chorus in this performance is sung by the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace Little Companion Art Troupe's Choir.
