A Night of Romance: Chopin and His Friends

Sixteen romantic favourites, from Schubert to Elgar — largely the short pieces from this period that get programmed on their own. Chopin has three: the Minute Waltz, the A minor waltz, and the Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2. Mendelssohn contributes Spring Song, On Wings of Song and the Midsummer Night's Dream suite. Tchaikovsky's three ballets each supply a number. Elgar's Salut d'amour and the first Pomp and Circumstance march close the evening. This is a greatest-hits programme rather than a structured one. It suits a first visit to a concert hall, or an evening where you are bringing someone new: most of the best-known romantic melodies pass by in ninety minutes. Oriental Recital Hall.
