About the work

Mendelssohn wrote his Midsummer Night's Dream overture in 1826, aged seventeen. In 1843, at the request of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, he added a full score of incidental music, Op. 61, for a staging in Potsdam. The Scherzo flickers like fairy wings, the Nocturne gives the sleeping forest to a solo horn, and the Wedding March long ago escaped the concert hall. Seventeen years separate overture and score, yet the seams are invisible.
