It opened in 1930 as the Nanking Theatre, a cinema, designed by Robert Fan and Zhao Shen behind sixteen Corinthian columns. In 1959 it became the Shanghai Concert Hall and has been a music room ever since.
In 2003, to make way for the widening of the Yan'an Road elevated highway, the whole building was jacked up and moved 66.46 metres to the southeast, and raised 3.38 metres. It was among the most difficult building relocations attempted in China at the time; the brick-and-timber structure travelled intact. It reopened in 2004, and was renovated again in 2019–20, mostly for acoustics and stage systems.
The main hall is a traditional shoebox with a coffered ceiling and a clean, fairly dry reverberation that lets inner parts through. The South Hall and the Music Cube downstairs are much smaller rooms, and are where the lunchtime concerts and the small-format programmes happen.
