Raphaela Gromes, cello: a recital at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music

About the performance

The German cellist Raphaela Gromes and Julian Riem, her duo partner since 2012, play the Shanghai Conservatory's North Building hall, joined after the interval by six cellists from the conservatory. It opens with Richard Strauss's Cello Sonata in F major, Op. 6, written around his nineteenth year; Gromes made the premiere recording of Strauss's first cello sonata. Two rarities follow: Offenbach's Op. 54 No. 3 for two cellos, written by a composer who was himself a cellist, and the first movement of the French composer Jérôme Ducros's Trio for Two Cellos and Piano of 2006. The second half is three works for solo cello with a cello ensemble: Florence Price's Adoration, by the first Black woman to have a work played by a major American orchestra; the Aria from Victoria Yagling's Suite for Cello and String Orchestra, Yagling having studied with Rostropovich and written mostly for her own instrument; and Riem's arrangement of a Carmen fantasy on Bizet. Admission is free, the hall seats 120, and a reservation is required.
