Future Masters: Echoes of the Volga - Zhang Wenge Bass-Baritone Recital

About the performance
Nineteen items, split about evenly between Russian art song and operatic arias, with two folk songs in between. The first half opens with two Sviridov settings, then two Rimsky-Korsakov romances and Sibelius's The Spruce, before the two folk songs — the Song of the Volga Boatmen and Along Peterskaya Street — that are standard bass-baritone repertoire and give the recital its title. Shostakovich and Mussorgsky's Song of the Flea follow, then the programme turns west for Strauss's Morgen, Massenet's Élégie, Tchaikovsky's None but the Lonely Heart and Rachmaninov's How Fair This Spot. The second half is opera: Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride, Leporello's catalogue aria from Don Giovanni, Baniewicz's The Story of Kai and Gerda, Prokofiev's War and Peace, closing on the Song of the Golden Calf from Gounod's Faust. The programme also lists Popper's Concert Polonaise, which is a cello piece; no accompanist or partner has been announced. Zhang Wenge spent fourteen years at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and the repertoire sits where the training does. SHOAC Recital Hall, about 80 minutes, part of SHOAC's Future Masters series, 80 to 300 yuan.
