About the work

Mozart's last violin concerto, written in Salzburg at nineteen. The first movement has an entrance like no other: after the orchestral allegro, the soloist appears with an unexpected slow aria before launching the allegro proper. In the finale's minuet, an A-minor 'Turkish' episode crashes in — cellos and basses striking the strings with the wood of their bows in imitation of janissary drums — giving the concerto its nickname.
