About the work
Composed in 1785 and published together with the C minor Sonata K. 457. It runs without a break, built from five linked sections of contrasting tempo and character, with the descending chromatic theme of the opening returning unchanged at the end. There is no settled tonal plan: the modulations are frequent and abrupt, making this the harmonically freest of Mozart's keyboard works.
