Mozart

Rondo in A minor, KV 511

About the work

Written in Vienna in 1787, Mozart's last rondo for solo piano. The theme carries the lilt of a siciliana, and returns each time under increasingly dense ornamentation. Its chromatic writing and constant modulation sit close to the operas he was composing at the time, and it is often taken to be the most inward of all his keyboard pieces. Mozart wrote no further standalone rondo for the instrument.
