About the work
Composed in 1784, this is Mozart's only piano sonata in a minor key. When it was published the following year he placed the C minor Fantasia K. 475, written in 1785, in front of it and issued the two as a single unit; they are often still played that way. The rising arpeggio that opens the first movement, set against the silences that follow it, is a fractured manner of writing new to his sonatas.
