About the work

The sinfonia concertante — half concerto, half symphony — sets multiple soloists against the orchestra, and Mozart's E-flat major work of 1779, written in Salzburg, is the genre's acknowledged masterwork. Violin and viola trade phrases like two operatic characters, and Mozart asks the viola to tune its strings up a semitone for extra brilliance.
