Why October's concerts collide, and August is so empty
As of 26 August, Shanghai Concerts lists 110 performances in October with 26 same-minute clashes, against 11 in August. The crowding comes from season openings, a single 19:30 curtain and the weekends. National Day week is an ordinary week.

The calendar asked this question itself. Turn to October 2026 and several evenings stack four or five concerts; turn back to August and the whole month holds fewer than one October weekend. We pulled the numbers out of our own database and checked them. As of 26 August, this is the picture.
Start with volume. Shanghai Concerts lists 65 performances in August, across 44 productions. September has 75 performances and 53 productions. October has 110 and 52. November has 110 and 56. December has 88 and 43. January 2027 drops to 30, and February so far holds 4.
Of October's 110 performances, The Phantom of the Opera alone accounts for 36 nights at Shanghai Grand Theatre. Set aside anything that runs more than three nights and August has 43 one-off or short-run productions, October 49. Counted by production, October is six ahead of August. The feeling of a crammed month comes from somewhere else.
It comes from collisions. We count a collision whenever two or more productions open on the same date at the same minute. August has 11 such slots, involving 30 productions. September has 15 slots and 40 productions. October has 26 slots and 76 productions. November 18 and 56. December 13 and 29. The tightest night is Friday 16 October, when five curtains go up at 19:30. Anoushka Shankar at the Oriental Concert Hall, the Quatuor Van Kuijk at Shanghai Concert Hall, the Lyon Opera Ballet in Dance at the Shanghai Conservatory Opera House, Papadopoulos in the Grand Theatre's Drama Theatre and Phantom in its main house. The Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève opens at 19:15 in the Oriental Opera Hall the same evening. Anyone who wants two of these gets one.
The collisions sit on a single minute. Of the 340 performances between September and December with a published curtain time, 211 start at 19:30. Every house opens its doors at the same hour, so on any night when three of them are playing a clash is close to certain. Weekends magnify it. Of the 220 performances in October and November, 65 fall on a Saturday and 50 on a Sunday. Mondays have 6.
Many people put October's crowding down to the National Day holiday. The numbers do not support that. The first eight days of October carry 24 performances; the last nine days carry 36. The holiday is an ordinary week. The month fills up at its end.
So why is August empty. The answer is in each house's season. The new season series at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai Concert Hall all begin on 4 September. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra's orchestral series opens on 11 September, the Suzhou Symphony on 12 September. The Shanghai Grand Opera House opens its inaugural season, Songs for New Voices, on 17 October, 30 productions through 30 January; the new house has 2 performances in August, 13 in October and 27 in November. The Shanghai Conservatory Opera House has nothing in August and 7 in October. Shanghai Symphony Hall hosts 6 performances in August, none of them by the orchestra itself, whose first appearance after 1 August is 11 September.
The other end of August is in Europe. Salzburg, Lucerne and the Proms all run through the month, and the touring orchestras and soloists are there. The autumn Asian tours land in October and November. Gergiev and the Mariinsky's complete Shostakovich symphonies begin on 24 October at the Shanghai Grand Opera House, Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields play Shanghai Concert Hall on 17 October, and the chamber festival led by Argerich, Vengerov and Isserlis starts on 24 October at the Oriental Concert Hall. On the nights of 24 and 25 October, Gergiev and Argerich both go up at 19:30.
February's 4 performances are half Spring Festival and half announcements not yet made. October will grow too; the houses are still announcing and releasing their autumn and winter dates. The figures in this article are our holdings on 26 August. Count again in a month and October will only be tighter.
