Chamber
Quatuor Van Kuijk: Masterworks
About the performance
Quatuor Van Kuijk won first prize at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2015 along with the Beethoven and Haydn prizes, then went into the BBC New Generation Artists scheme; this is their third visit to China. Adrien Boisseau joins as guest violist for the Asian tour. The format is worth stating plainly: Masterworks plays no complete work. It takes one movement from each of eleven composers' quartets and runs them in rough chronological order across two halves — the introduction to Mozart's "Dissonance", then Brahms, Debussy, Haydn and Mendelssohn; after the interval Smetana, Bartók's pizzicato movement, the Lento from Dvořák's "American", Shostakovich, and finally the Molto adagio from Beethoven's second "Razumovsky" and the finale of Schumann's Op. 41 No. 1. The gain is a three-hundred-year survey of the genre in one sitting, with a very low barrier to entry. The cost is real too: a string quartet's weight lies in how a whole work argues itself out, and a single movement lifted from it — a slow movement especially — is easily reduced to atmosphere. Come to meet the ensemble rather than to meet the works.
