Light and Journey: Su Meiling Vocal Recital

About the performance
Sixteen songs, nearly all in Chinese, running from the early art songs of Ying Shangneng and Ding Shande to writing by living composers including Zhao Jiping, Gao Weijie and Wang Jianmin. Several folk arrangements sit among them. Youth Dance Song comes from a Uyghur folk melody, Meng Meng from Xiangfen in Shanxi, and the Swallow Song from the Kazakh composer Zhubanov. The one non-Chinese item is "È la solita storia" from Cilea's L'Arlesiana. Programmes like this are not common here. Chinese art song gets far fewer outings than the German repertoire, and hearing a dozen of them in sequence across nearly a century of writing is rarer still. Oriental Recital Hall, about 90 minutes.
