Vocal Paramount: Shanghai Opera House 26/27 Season Opening Concert

The Shanghai Opera House opens its 2026/27 season with fifteen numbers, Zhang Liang conducting the Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra. Two orchestral pieces hold the frame — the quadrille Johann Strauss II drew out of Die Fledermaus, and Offenbach's Orphée aux enfers overture, which ends in the can-can everyone can hum. Thirteen are sung. Nine are European: two Lehár operetta numbers at either end, and in between Donizetti, Delibes, Bizet, Gounod, Puccini and Verdi — the Flower Duet from Lakmé, the tenor-baritone duet from Les pêcheurs de perles, the Rigoletto quartet, which are among the most frequently excerpted ensembles in the repertoire. The remaining four come from Chinese national operas: one number each from Red Poppies and The Knot of Hearts, and two from Daughter of the Party held back to the end for Lei Jia. Sopranos Lei Jia and Huang Ying and tenors Wang Hongwei and Shi Yijie lead; Shi is also the company's current president. Twelve more singers come from the house roster and from the first cohort of its young-artist programme, and they get the Rigoletto quartet and the seven-man ensemble from Die lustige Witwe. A gala bill of this kind usually lists only the famous names; this one puts the newcomers into the ensembles.
