Kirill Gerstein Piano Recital

The first half is Liszt's programme music: three Petrarch Sonnets and the Dante Sonata, both from the Italian book of Années de pèlerinage, both pointing straight at a text. The second half turns to two early works of Brahms, the Scherzo in E-flat minor, Op. 4, and the Third Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 5, written around his twentieth year and among the pieces he carried to Schumann in 1853. Between them Gerstein places the second of Brett Dean's Hommage à Brahms, "Hafenkneipenmusik", a set written to be interleaved with Brahms's own late piano pieces. Gerstein entered Berklee at fourteen as its youngest student and went on to win first prize at the Arthur Rubinstein Competition and the Gilmore Artist Award in 2010.
