Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields

Joshua Bell returns to the Shanghai Concert Hall after eight years, with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, whose music director he has been since 2011. He does two jobs in one evening. Before the interval he is the soloist, in Dvořák's A minor concerto — a piece that sits permanently behind the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky in the repertoire and is better written than its reputation, particularly the slow movement. After it he stands inside the orchestra and directs Mozart's Jupiter from the violin, the end point of eighteenth-century symphonic writing, whose finale stacks five subjects into a fugue. The evening opens with Beethoven's Egmont Overture. The Academy was founded in 1958 by Neville Marriner at the church on Trafalgar Square it is named after, and is among the most recorded chamber orchestras anywhere. Bell plays the 1713 Huberman Stradivarius; he was also the solo violinist on the score for The Red Violin, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
