Rudolf Buchbinder & Staatskapelle Berlin: Beethoven Piano Concertos Cycle

Rudolf Buchbinder and the Staatskapelle Berlin perform all five Beethoven piano concertos across two nights in the Soar Theatre at the Shanghai Grand Opera House. On both nights Buchbinder is soloist and directs from the piano; no separate conductor is involved. The Shanghai Grand Opera House says Shanghai is the only stop on this Asian tour where the complete set can be heard. On 7 November the programme opens with No. 2 and No. 4, then No. 3 after the interval. On 9 November it begins with No. 1, then No. 5, the "Emperor", after the interval. Each night lasts about 90 minutes and has one interval. Buchbinder is Austrian and is about to turn 80. He made his debut at the Vienna Musikverein in 1958, aged 11, playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. The Staatskapelle Berlin developed from the Brandenburg electoral court orchestra of 1570, gave the Berlin premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1826, and has been led by Christian Thielemann as music director since the 2024/25 season. The two concerts form part of the Shanghai Grand Opera House's opening season and of the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
