2026 Oriental Citizens' Concert: Dance & Opera - Niu Niu Piano Recital

Everything on this programme is a transcription. The title's dance and opera refer to where the music came from; nothing here was written for piano. The first half is dance. Prokofiev's Op. 75 is the composer's own piano arrangement of numbers from his Romeo and Juliet; the Nutcracker is Pletnev's concert suite, which asks considerably more of the player than the score it came from and more than the usual piano versions. The second half is opera: four Puccini arias, one each from Gianni Schicchi, Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Turandot, closing with Liszt's Réminiscences de Don Juan, which folds three passages of Mozart's opera into one piece and sits among the hardest of the nineteenth-century opera fantasies. Niu Niu, born Zhang Shengliang, plays. Part of the Oriental Citizens Concert series, Saturday morning at 10:00, about 70 minutes, tickets at 50 and 80 yuan.
