Pärt
Tribute to Caesar
About the work
Composed in 1997 for unaccompanied choir. The text is the passage from Matthew in which the Pharisees try to trap Jesus over the payment of tribute and receive the answer to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. The setting uses the tintinnabuli technique Pärt arrived at in the 1970s: one voice moves stepwise along the scale while another sounds only the notes of the tonic triad.
