Toccata in C minor, BWV 911

About the work

Bach left seven keyboard toccatas, and the C minor, BWV 911, dates from his twenties. The toccata is an improvisatory genre: a free opening flourish, an aria-like adagio, and then a single massive fugue that occupies most of the work's length. On the modern piano it takes on almost Romantic drama, which has made it one of the most frequently programmed of the set.
