Shanghai Grand Theatre
- Address:
- 300 People's Avenue, Huangpu District, Shanghai
Opened 1998 on the west side of People's Square; three theatres.
Official websiteAbout the hall
Opened in 1998 to a design by Jean-Marie Charpentier, on the west side of People's Square. A white box under a curved roof that turns up at the edges; lit from within at night, it was among the most recognisable public buildings of 1990s Shanghai.
The 1800-seat main theatre is Shanghai's principal opera and ballet stage, and where most touring productions land. The medium and small theatres step down in scale for plays, chamber opera and smaller work.
People's Square is crowded before and after a show, and the walk from the metro crosses the square. Allow five minutes more than the map suggests.
