Xu Zhong & Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra Play Mozart

Four Mozart works — two piano concertos and two symphonies — with Xu Zhong both conducting and playing. The first half is the concertos. No. 9 in E-flat, K. 271, the "Jenamy", was written in 1777 when Mozart was twenty-one; the piano interrupts the orchestra's opening phrase in the second bar, which no concerto had done before. No. 21 in C, K. 467, has a slow movement that a 1967 Swedish film made famous. The second half is two symphonies named for cities. No. 31 in D, K. 297, the "Paris", was written in 1778 for the Concert Spirituel and was his first symphony for an orchestra with clarinets. No. 38 in D, K. 504, the "Prague", followed in 1786 in three movements, with no minuet. Xu Zhong conducts from the keyboard; he is president of the Shanghai Opera House, whose symphony orchestra plays. SHOAC Concert Hall, about 100 minutes, 180 to 680 yuan.
