Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra 2026 Shanghai Concert

The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra travels without a conductor, letting the players' long-standing ensemble carry the evening — their usual practice on tour. Five works, all for strings. Boccherini's Symphony No. 10 in F, Op. 35 No. 4 opens, followed by Tchaikovsky's Andante cantabile, originally the second movement of his First String Quartet and best known in this string-orchestra form. At the centre is Saint-Saëns's First Cello Concerto in A minor, arranged for strings, with Nikolaus von Bülow, the orchestra's principal cello since 2007 and its cello soloist since the 2018/19 season. After that, Skalkottas's Five Greek Dances and Josef Suk's Serenade for Strings, Op. 6, written when he was eighteen after Dvořák suggested he try something cheerful. One caveat: an amendment issued by the Shanghai culture bureau on 18 August (permit 沪文旅许[2026]4449号) records an added work, and the presenter has not said which. The five above are what has been published. Karl Münchinger founded the orchestra in Stuttgart in 1945, among the first German chamber orchestras of its kind. SHOAC Concert Hall, about 90 minutes, 100 to 480 yuan.
