Pictures for Winds: Shanghai Dandelion Symphonic Wind Orchestra at Two

The Shanghai Dandelion Symphonic Wind Orchestra marks its second anniversary at the He Luting Concert Hall on 5 September 2026 at 19:30, conducted by Cheng Ye. The first half is Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in a wind band arrangement. The work began as a piano suite in 1874, written after a memorial exhibition for the composer's friend Hartmann, and most listeners know it through Ravel's 1922 orchestration. Without strings, the ten movements and the recurring Promenade fall entirely to woodwind, brass and percussion — most audibly in the closing Great Gate of Kiev. The presenter does not name the arranger. The second half is a set of film and popular numbers. The poster prints a partial list only, and its Chinese and English columns do not match line for line: the English reads Fly Me to the Moon, Tico-Tico, The Lion King, Dance of Youth and Bad, while the Chinese adds 珠穆朗玛峰 and 勇闯夺命岛 (The Rock). The orchestra was founded in Shanghai in March 2024, with players drawn from professional orchestras and from the conservatories.
