About the work
A piano suite of 1874, written in memory of the architect and painter Viktor Hartmann: ten pieces after works in his memorial exhibition, linked by a recurring Promenade that is the viewer walking between them. Unpublished in Mussorgsky's lifetime, it is best known today through Ravel's 1922 orchestration, made for Koussevitzky; arrangements for wind band, brass band, synthesizer and rock band have never stopped appearing.
