Rimsky-Korsakov

A naval officer who finished his first symphony during a round-the-world voyage. He was the most technically solid of the Mighty Handful, and later a professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory who taught Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Glazunov.

He wrote a treatise, Principles of Orchestration, that is still in use. In Scheherazade the recurring violin solo is the storyteller, and she threads the four movements together — a device of using a soloist as narrator that has been imitated ever since. He also edited and reorchestrated Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and Night on Bald Mountain, work that rescued those pieces and has been argued about ever since.
