Sonata for Solo Violin in G major, Op. 27, No. 5

About the work

Eugene Ysaye composed his six sonatas for solo violin in 1923, dedicating each to a violinist of his time. The Fifth, in G major, inscribed to his pupil Mathieu Crickboom, has only two movements: "L'Aurore" paints a slow dawn in hushed arpeggios and harmonics, and "Danse rustique" drives the work home on a stamping rural rhythm. Debussyan color inside Paganinian virtuosity — a cornerstone of the twentieth-century unaccompanied repertoire.
