About the work
The original is the String Quartet No. 8, written in Dresden in three days in 1960 and inscribed "to the victims of fascism and war". The DSCH motif spelling the composer's own initials runs through every movement, alongside quotations from his First, Eighth and Tenth symphonies and from Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Rudolf Barshai made this arrangement for string orchestra.
