About the work

The final panel of the Roman trilogy, completed in 1928 and premiered in 1929 by Toscanini and the New York Philharmonic, spans the city's festivals across the centuries: games and martyrs' hymns in the ancient circus, pilgrims sighting Rome in the Jubilee, harvest horns and serenades in the October festival, and the riotous Epiphany carnival. It is the loudest and most extravagantly scored of the three — a test of any orchestra's ability to revel without losing control.
