SSO in Chamber 3: Mahler Symphony No. 4 for Chamber Orchestra

Shanghai Symphony Hall · Chamber Hall · 19:15

About the work

Erwin Stein made this arrangement in 1921 for Schoenberg's Society for Private Musical Performances. The society could not afford a full orchestra, so symphonies were reduced to a dozen or so players; this version uses string quintet, flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, harmonium and percussion. The soprano solo in the finale sets a Wunderhorn poem describing heaven as a child imagines it.
