About the work

Froberger studied in Rome with Frescobaldi before a long period at the Viennese court, and travelled through Italy, France, England and the German lands. He fused the Italian toccata manner with the French lute style, and established the allemande-courante-sarabande-gigue ordering of the suite that Bach would later inherit. Like Louis Couperin's, his music circulated in manuscript rather than print, and several of his suites carry programmatic titles commemorating specific people or events.
