About the work

Written in the summer of 1893 in Spillville, Iowa — a Czech immigrant village where Dvořák spent three months on holiday. This viola quintet dates from the same weeks as the "American" Quartet. The drumming rhythms of the second movement are thought to derive from Native American dancing he saw locally, and the third movement is a set of variations.
