Shanghai Grand Opera House Stress Tests Start August 15: Concert Rigoletto and an SSO Night Have Permits

Shanghai Grand Opera House does not open until October 17. The building makes its first sound on August 15.

The house has said it will run about 10 stress-test performances between August 15 and September 28, one or two a week, across all three theatres: the 2,000-seat Harmony Hall, the 1,200-seat Soar Theatre, and the 1,000-seat Open Stage. Local companies take a night each, among them Shanghai Opera House, Shanghai Ballet, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic, Shanghai Jingju Theatre and Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble. The tests cover stage machinery, lighting, sound and equipment, and also the audience path: entry, in-house service, and getting out. The house's own account is that a first unofficial audience will walk in, so artists and listeners can check the building together.

The two we can already match to a permit

Stress tests rarely get a press release. The Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism publishes the permits. As of August 11 we have confirmed two.

• Rigoletto, concert performance · Saturday, August 15, 19:30, Soar Theatre. Permit 沪文旅许[2026]4286, issued August 5. 157 performers declared. One night.
• Shanghai Symphony Orchestra concert · Sunday, August 23, 19:30, hall not stated in the permit. Permit 沪文旅许[2026]4214, issued August 3. 115 performers declared. One night.

Both are presented by Shanghai Grand Theatre Management Co., which operates the opera house. Both went through the approval track for performances with non-mainland artists, so at least one artist from outside the mainland is on stage. The permit does not name them. We never ingest the performer roster attached to these documents. It carries partial ID numbers.

How we read these two

What follows is our reading, not an official statement.

A concert performance of an opera is a hard acoustic test. No set, no pit to absorb anything. 157 people, orchestra, chorus, soloists, standing on the Soar Theatre stage and sending sound straight into the room. That finds the hall's ceiling, and where it breaks, in one night. The SSO on August 23 is smaller (115), but it is the first time a professional symphony orchestra measures this building.

Rigoletto itself is not new in Shanghai. Shanghai Opera House staged the full opera at the Shanghai Conservatory opera house this June. August is a concert version, presented by the house itself. Different job.

Invite people who can write the fault down

A stress test is useful when someone can put a problem on a work order. How the lobby photographs will be obvious to anyone holding an October ticket. Before opening, the house needs to know about reverberation, dead spots, rake, background noise, and whether 1,200 people leaving at once will jam a corner.

What is the reverberation time in the Soar Theatre at full capacity, and does it swallow vocal clarity?
How far apart are the rear stalls and the balcony in sound, and are there dead spots?
Is the rake steep enough that a tall person in front does not erase the back of the stage?
Is HVAC and equipment noise audible in quiet passages?
With 1,200 people leaving at once, how long does it take, and where does the flow jam?

Only people who listen often, and have another hall to compare, can answer those. Give them the seats and the test is actually a test.

What we still do not know

• Which company performs Rigoletto, and the cast. Not published.
• Which hall hosts the August 23 SSO concert. Not stated in the permit.
• How invitations are allocated, and whether any public sign-up exists. Not published.
• Dates, programmes and halls for the other roughly 8 stress tests. Not yet in the permit feed or any public channel.

These performances are not on public sale. The audience is invited by the house. As of publication no ticketing channel lists them. For that reason neither appears in our concert calendar. The calendar only carries performances you can buy a ticket for. The permit records stay in our data layer, and we will update this page if that changes.
