Shanghai Changtan Music Hall has announced a September piano recital on their official WeChat account: Spanish pianist Martín García García will perform on September 13 (Sunday) at 14:00, with a programme pairing Chopin and Liszt.
Programme
An all-Chopin first half, all-Liszt second half:
First Half
- Chopin: Ballade No. 2 in F major, Op. 38
- Chopin: Scherzo No. 4 in E major, Op. 54
- Chopin: Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, Op. 39
- Chopin: Mazurkas, Op. 63
- Chopin: Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52
Second Half
- Liszt: Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este S. 534iii
- Liszt: Légende — St. Francis of Paola Walking on the Waves S. 175 No. 2
- Liszt: Sonata in B minor S. 178
The programming has real substance: the Chopin selections draw from middle-to-late period works with high structural density, and the Liszt half builds from late religious pieces to the B minor Sonata — a single-movement, thirty-minute work that remains the ultimate test of a pianist's architectural command.
The Pianist
Born in Spain in 1996, García García had a breakout 2021: first prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition followed by third prize at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, plus the Warsaw Philharmonic's special award for best concert performance.
