About
The oldest symphony orchestra in Asia. It was founded in 1879 as the Shanghai Public Band, expanded to a full orchestra in 1907, and took the name Shanghai Municipal Council Symphony Orchestra in 1922, when it was known across the region as the finest orchestra in the Far East. It became the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1956. Long Yu has been Music Director since 2009. In September 2014 the orchestra moved into Shanghai Symphony Hall at 1380 Middle Fuxing Road, the first hall built for it. In 2018 it signed with Deutsche Grammophon, the first Chinese orchestra to hold an exclusive relationship with the label. The season runs from September to July, with the main subscription concerts in the main hall, the chamber series in the smaller hall, and the Music Map lectures and Rush Hour concerts aimed at first-time listeners. In summer the orchestra presents the Music in the Summer Air festival (MISA).
