Life

One of the founders of modern Mexican music. He went to Paris in his forties to study with Dukas, met the guitarist Segovia around the same time, and the two collaborated for more than twenty years — a relationship that produced a large part of the serious guitar repertoire.

The two of them ran a hoax together: the Suite in A minor was published as the work of the eighteenth-century lutenist Weiss and fooled the critical world for years. His early song Estrellita became so widely sung that it was taken for a Mexican folk tune, and he collected very little in royalties for it.
