Florence Price

An American composer, born in Little Rock, Arkansas. When the Chicago Symphony gave the premiere of her First Symphony in E minor in 1933 she became the first Black woman to have a work played by a major American orchestra. She wrote four symphonies, concertos, art songs and a great deal of piano and organ music. Her work was largely forgotten until a cache of manuscripts was found in her abandoned summer house in 2009, since when recordings and performances have multiplied.
